You may have noticed the audio recognition app Shazam appearing in TV advertising recently, so we’ve decided to find out what it’s all about.

Shazam first came on the scene as a useful app that would recognise music playing in the real world – if you heard music and wanted to find out what the song was – the Shazam app would figure it out for you.

In a press release last year, Shazam explained they are providing a streamlined second screen experience for television:

Shazam® is bringing you exciting new ways to engage with the world around you. A major feature of this month’s update is a streamlined second-screen experience for television in the U.S. Plus, Shazam has added great new content in the music results and has integrated even more with Facebook.

In a nutshell, Shazam TV Advertising aims to provide more information about what you are watching as you are watching it. However, this app can be used with TV programmes in addition to advertising.  We’ve outlined some of their features below and they’ve came up with a handy video to explain it all:

  • See songs featured in the broadcast
  • Latest news & gossip on the cast, guests and show
  • Connect with social media – see tweets from the cast, other celebs or join in.
  • Quickly go to IMDB to find out all the info on the show

At the moment Shazam-able TV and advertisements are primarily available in the US and UK, they are working on rolling it out across other countries.  To know if you can Shazam a show or advert, keep an eye out for the Shazam “call to action” on the screen.
