No matter what your business, there are lots of simple and easy things you can do to make it greener. Not only will it be good for the environment but good for your pocket too! Conserving resources, cutting down on waste and using greener energy saves money!
So here are 5 small changes that will make a big difference to your carbon footprint.
1. Start with your computer.
For many, a computer is the most used tool at work. However, optimise the energy seetings for computers and other devices and shut them down when you leave work for the day. Standby settings continue to draw power when not in use, so make sure you completely shut them off.
Other devices that perhaps are only used occasionally such as printers and scanners can be unplugged until they are needed. Don’t just kill power to printers – the reason they always prompt you to switch them off is that they need to seal their cartridges.
It may seem really obvious, but always remember to turn off lights in areas that are not in use too!
2. Go paperless, where you can.
The more you do online, the less you need paper so try keep what you can digital. Review documents onscreen rather than just printing them out and try send e-mails instead of letters.
When you do print, use both sides of the page when appropriate, remembering to re-use any misprints or mistakes as note paper. If your business creates packages, reuse boxes and shredded waste paper as packing material.
However, we do know that using paper can’t always be completely avoided. Use recycled paper and envelopes that have been processed using eco-frindly methods. Other office stationary such as pens and penciles can also be made from recycled materials.
3. Watch your water!
Don’t leave taps dripping, always close them tightly after use.
4. Look out for greener appliances.
When the time comes to replace outdated appliances, replace them with greener versions, they will help save energy (and cash) over time. There may be an initial splurge but it will be worth it for the long term economical and environmental savings. Don’t forget to recycle your old ones!
5. Travel Green.
Making your business greener extends to outwith the office walls too – think about how you are commuting. Use public transportation, car share, walk or cycle! All these options will reduce your carbon footprint and increase your commitment to becoming greener!
