What is Facebook Moments?

With every man and his dog having a smartphone these days – the important moments in our lives are captured by our friends and we all know the struggle when trying to get the pictures from a night out that your friends have taken of you.

Facebook users share more than 350 MILLION photos every single day but for every one shared, the chances are there’s a good few that never make it off your phone. Facebook has introduced a new standalone app called Moments for these photos or perhaps just ones that you would like to share privately as opposed to on your wall.

The moments app syncs with the photos and you can choose which ones to upload – it then organises them into groups based on which friends are in the photos and where they were taken. The app also has the same facial recognition features as photos shared on Facebook.

“When you go to a wedding, for example, there are many people taking great photos throughout the day. You all want a quick way to share your photos with the friends who are in them, and get photos that you’re in back. The same is true for smaller events too, like a kayak trip or a night out.” – Will Ruben, Product Manager at Facebook

We reckon that Moments could double up as a back up solution for your pictures as the app doesn’t have a limit on photo storage and can be synced to your account.  However, images saved in Moments aren’t full quality.  Ruben said images are optimised for speed and quality so full resolution images aren’t an option but could still be a handy way to recover photos you might have otherwise lost or are taking up precious memory.
